Ms. Katherine Newberry joins Wellesley High School as a Gateways TA and is eager to assist students with their goals. As a Gateways TA, Newberry assists students with academic work around the building. By pushing into classes and sitting with students, she helps take notes and keeps students organized, ensuring they don't fall behind.
Newberry grew up in the D.C. area and has been running since she was young, eventually becoming a competitive runner. Newberry ran professionally for fourteen years, and was a seven-time member of the Team USA track team, before becoming a mother of two in 2014. Previously having worked part-time with the Harvard track team, she returned to racing in 2020 for the Olympic Team Trials.
After struggling through school she had learned management and goal achieving skills, which helped her further refine and understand her work. Now working at the high school, she wishes to “pass on her experience” and improve the academic development of students with her determined and thoughtful personality.
Newberry said the skills she learned are applicable to an educational environment through helping students set and earn their goals and break things down into manageable steps and “succeed”.
Newberry is a “huge help in my 10th grade English class. She is great at anticipating student needs and making my lesson plans flow smoothly," media literacy and English teacher Mr. Daniel Joseph said.
With two twins at the middle school and a dog, Newberry fits in perfectly with the bustling atmosphere of Wellesley High School.
Having two children is like “trying to raise different personalities and parent them based on their needs,” said Newberry. She said the certain abilities she has learned from parenting apply to her teaching, but that it's also reciprocal.
Working at the high school, Newberry is excited to provide guidance to students and help them succeed academically.
